Ladder Care and Maintenance Tips

By June 11, 2020No Comments

People have a tendency to take things for granted, especially things they frequently see and use – like ladders. Because ladders are the go-to tools of tradespeople and homeowners in Brisbane and all over Australia, it can be easy for some to neglect ladder maintenance and only provide care when obvious defects appear. However, this can do more harm than good.

Failing to maintain ladders can compromise their integrity and even increase the risk of injury for users. Hence, to avoid such unfortunate scenarios, it pays to be vigilant and ensure ladder safety by performing regular care and maintenance.

Whether you own extension, platform step, or attic ladders, here are some tips you should keep in mind.

Handling

  • Before and after every use, ensure the equipment is clean and free of oil, mud, grease or any other substance that may make the steps or rungs slippery.
  • Make sure not to drop the equipment. Ladders that receive a heavy blow may become damaged, have loosened steps or rungs and deformed stiles. Should this happen, inspect the equipment thoroughly before using it.

Inspection

  • It pays to have a ladder inspection checklist so you will know what to look for. Some of the items you should include in your ladder inspection checklist include: missing or loose rungs, damaged feet, faulty spreaders, rot or decay in wooden equipment, twisted rails, splintered surfaces, and missing identification labels.
  • Apart from the usual inspection before and after use, especially for parts most prone to damage, a more comprehensive examination must also be performed by a competent person. Any defective equipment must be suitably labelled or taken out of service.

Storage

  • When not in use, store the equipment horizontally on racks. Never hang them from the rungs or stiles.
  • Avoid storing materials on the equipment.
  • Make sure wood ladders are not stored in areas where they are directly exposed to heat or dampness. Fiberglass ladders should also be kept in areas not exposed to sunlight or other ultraviolet light sources.

Painting

  • For wooden equipment, use a clear sealer or wood preservative. Never use paint as this will conceal cracks and other defects.

Transport

  • When in transit, make sure ladders are properly secured. Avoid placing them where they can easily bump against other objects as this can lead to damage.

Regular and proper ladder maintenance is essential to ladder safety. Be sure to keep the above tips in mind to keep your equipment in pristine condition and protect users from injury.
