Guide to Maintaining Your Tools

By June 11, 2020No Comments

To make sure that your tools last long and are always operating at their optimum capacity it is essential that they are properly maintained and cared for on a regular basis. Think of your tools as if you would your own body. You cannot just flounder about eating poorly and not exercising and still expect to be fit and ready to run marathons. Like your body, tools need to be regularly cleaned, repaired and updated so that you can see the best possible results in your work.

Tools that are not properly maintained will inevitably lead to less than stellar finishes, poor final products and damage to the aforementioned tools. That is why Vetner is here to advise you on all the best techniques to keep your beloved trade tools performing to their highest potential.

Clean After Every Use

To ensure that there is no future breakdown or decay on any of your construction instruments it is necessary to clean your tools after every single use. By using a basic rag or cloth lightly wetted with any number of industrial solvents you can keep your tools in pristine condition. Try using ammonia or a mix of shellac and turpentine for effective results. This will wipe away oily sawdust and other potentially harmful resin and residue.

Completing a regular clean after use is such a simple solution to any potential future erosion that takes absolutely minimal effort. Save future costs by giving your hand tools a quick wipe down every time they have gotten a work out.

Prevent Rust

There are two ways in which you can prevent your construction tools from becoming rusty. The first way is to quite simply take not expose them to water or rainfall. This is, obviously, the easiest way to prevent any rust damage, however it is not always practical to shield your tools from the rain. In cases where it unavoidable to work in wet conditions, you should first apply a light coat of machine oil to your work tools. This will protect your precious utensils from potential water damage.

When your hand tools are not being used they should always be stored in a dry area to prevent rust. This could be in a watertight container or in a closed off garage, preferably with accompanying dehumidifier to reduce moisture.

Regularly Inspect Your Tools for Damage

Be alert and aware of the condition of your tools at all times by regularly inspecting and looking for signs of wear and tear. Be on the lookout for rust damage, frayed cords and wires and any obvious signs of damage. Be careful to never use tools that are in poor condition as you can risk injury or poor quality finished products.
